EKC's Big Night, our second annual Big Night fundraiser, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of Emma Kaufmann Camp, the JCC's overnight camp. Once again,we'll enjoy camaraderie in the beautiful facilities of the Irene Kaufmann Building in Squirrel Hill, with cocktails, dinner, dancing and fun entertainment.
We invite you to participate in this festive occasion as a sponsor, advertiser or by attending EKC's Big Night, an evening to benefit all JCC camps.
Camping is one of the earliest and most enduring programs of the JCC, dating back to the 1908 founding of Emma Farm Association resident camp in Harmarville, Pennsylvania.Over time, the camp became known as Emma Kaufmann Camp (EKC) and was relocated to the hills of West Virginia near Morgantown.
Each summer, EKC serves more than 800 children ages 7–16 from the greater Pittsburgh area, neighboring states and as far away as California, England and Israel. EKC is accredited by the American Camp Association.
Day and overnight camping experiences are important in helping young people gain confidence, encouraging independence and physical fitness, and teaching responsibility, cooperation, team-building and leadership.
Parents regularly comment about the benefits and growth that they see in their children after a summer experience at a JCC camp:
… My child learned an independence that is impossible for me to teach at home.
… Camp helps my children understand the notion of community and how to get along.
The JCC is recognized as a leader in providing innovative and substantial camping programs. Last summer, 2,524 children participated in the JCC’s 19 day and overnight camps, including 74 children with physical, cognitive or emotional challenges.
The JCC provided $149,548 in scholarship assistance to families who could not afford the full cost of camp. More than 300 campers received scholarship support.
EKC’s Big Night: A Festive Evening to Benefit JCC Camps, is themed around the JCC’s overnight camp, which is celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
Big Night will support all JCC camps as well as special projects at EKC, enabling the JCC to enhance its mission to provide quality experiences for all.
