JCC Day Camp Learn-to-Swim Program and Red Cross Level Equivalence

Make a splash with Swim Lessons, Mini-Waves and the JCC Tidal Wave Swim Team.

Minnows (level 1A)

Learn:

  • Getting in pool and out of pool
  • Bob 5 times to chin level (use Popcorn song to practice)
  • Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose for 3 seconds
  • Putting face in water (Only if child is ready)
  • Front float with support for 5 seconds (face in optional)
  • Back float with support for 5 seconds
  • Change directions of travel while walking, paddling or holding on the wall.
  • Explore arm and hand movements with support (front crawl/freestyle)
  • Kick on front with support
  • Kick on back with support
  • Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)

 

To pass to Tadpoles the camper must be able to:

1.      Blow bubbles for 3 seconds

2.      Front Float for 5 seconds with support (face in optional)

3.      Bob 5 times to chin level.

4.      Move for 5 yards unassisted. (Can walk, travel along the gutter or "swim")

 

Tadpoles (Level 1B)

Learn and Practice:

  • Getting in pool and out of pool
  • Bob 5 times to chin level (use Popcorn song to practice)
  • Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose for 3 seconds
  • Putting face in water, pick up submerged object at arms length (Only if child is ready)
  • Front float with support for 5 seconds (face in optional)
  • Roll over from front to back with support
  • Back float with support for 5 seconds
  • Roll over from back to front with support
  • Change directions of travel while walking, paddling or holding on the wall.
  • Kick on front with support
  • "Swim" on front with arms and legs with support (front crawl/freestyle)
  • Kick on back with support
  • Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)

 

To pass to Catfish the camper must be able to:

1.        Enter unassisted, move 5 yards, bob 5 times to chin level and safely exit the water. (Children can walk, travel along gutter or "swim")

2.        Float on front with support for 3 seconds, roll to back with assistance, and float on back with support for 3 seconds


Catfish (Level 2A)

Practice & Learn:

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side
  • Exit the water safely using ladder or side
  • Submerge entire head for 5 seconds
  • Bob 5 times
  • Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object at arms length or bottom 3 times
  • Front float for 3 seconds without support
  • Recover to standing position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front with support
  • Back float for 3 seconds without support
  • Recover to Standing position
  • Front streamline one body length
  • Combined arm and leg action on front for 3-4 strokes (front crawl/freestyle)
  • Sculling arms on back while kicking for 10 feet with support
  • Combined arm and leg action on back for 3-4 strokes
  • Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)

To pass to Dolphins the camper must be able to:

    1. Jump into water, stand up and do a front float with face in for 5 seconds. (without support)
    2. Bob 5 times going under water each time.
    3. Back float for 5 seconds (without support)
    4. Push off the wall and swim on front with combination of arms and legs for 3-4 strokes.

Dolphins (Level 2B)

Practice & Learn:

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side
  • Exit the water safely using ladder or side
  • Submerge entire head for 5 seconds
  • Bob 5 times
  • Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object at arms length or bottom 3 times
  • Front float for 5 seconds without support
  • Recover to standing position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front with support
  • Back float for 5 seconds without support
  • Recover to Standing position
  • Front streamline one body length
  • Combined arm and leg action on front for 6-8 strokes (front crawl/freestyle)
  • Sculling arms on back while kicking for 10 feet with support
  • Combined arm and leg action on back for 6-8 strokes
  • Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)

To pass to Goldfish the camper must be able to:

1.      Swim 6 front crawl strokes with high elbows

2.      Bob 5 times doing proper exhaling

3.      Swim 6 back crawl strokes

4.      Jump into water, front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, back float 5 seconds and then stand


Goldfish (Level 3A)

Practice:

·         Jump into deep water from side (instructor will catch)

·         Sit dive into water from side

·         Submerge and retrieve an object, 3 times

·         Perform bobs with head fully submerged 5 times

·         Perform rotary breathing with the body in horizontal position 3 times

·         Front float for 15 seconds

·         Front stream line 1 second

·         Back float for 15 seconds

·         Back stream line 1 second

·         Change from vertical to horizontal position on front in deep water with assistance

·         Change from vertical to horizontal position on back in deep water with assistance

·         Tread water for 15 seconds in deep water

·         Front crawl for 8-10 strokes

·         Back crawl for 8-10 strokes

·         Butterfly kick for 15 yards (to rope or flags)

·         Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)

·         Wearing a life jacket, enter the water from side

To pass to Porpoise the camper must be able to:

1.         Perform rotary breathing 5 times

2.         Front Crawl for 8 strokes

3.         Back crawl for 8 strokes

4.         Tread water for 15 seconds

 

Porpoise (Level 3B) (this group and beyond are eligible to take their deep water test)

Practice:

·         Jump into deep water from side (instructor will catch)

·         Sit dive into water from side

·         Submerge and retrieve an object, 3 times

·         Perform bobs with head fully submerged 5 times

·         Perform rotary breathing with the body in horizontal position 3 times

·         Front float for 30 seconds

·         Front stream line 2 seconds

·         Back float for 30 seconds

·         Back stream line 2 seconds

·         Change from vertical to horizontal position on front

·         Change from vertical to horizontal position on back

·         Tread water for 30 seconds in deep water

·         Front crawl for 10 strokes

·         Back crawl for 10 strokes

·         Butterfly kick and body motion for 15 yards (to rope or flags)

·         Sidestroke with support

·         Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)

·         Wearing a life jacket, enter the water from side

To pass to Rainbowfish the camper must be able to:

1.Jump into deep water, front Crawl for 10 strokes with rotary breathing, Back crawl for 10 strokes then tread water for 30 seconds


Rainbowfish (4A)

Practice:

  • Kneeling dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater 1 body length
  • Survival float for 30 seconds
  • Back float for 30 seconds
  • Open turn on front and push off in streamlined position
  • Open turn on back and push off in streamlined position
  • Tread water in deep for 30 seconds
  • Front crawl with side breathing ½ way across pool
  • Back crawl ½ way across pool
  • Breaststroke kick 15 yards
  • Butterfly arms and legs 15 yards
  • Elementary backstroke 15 yards (chicken, T, solider)
  • Swim on side with scissors kick
  • Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)
  • Wearing a life jacket, jump into water and swim 15 yards on front, then on back

To pass to Bronze Shark the camper must be able to:

  1. Jump in deep water, front crawl ½ way across pool, back crawl ½ way back across pool, tread for 30 seconds
  2. kick breaststroke 15 yarrds

 

Bronze Sharks (Level 4B)

Practice:

  • Kneeling dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater 1 body length
  • Survival float for 1 minute
  • Back float for 1 minute
  • Open turn on front and push off in streamlined position
  • Open turn on back and push off in streamlined position
  • Tread water in deep for 1 minute seconds
  • Front crawl with side breathing 25 yards
  • Back crawl 25 yards
  • Breaststroke 15 yards
  • Butterfly 15 yards
  • Elementary backstroke 15 yards (chicken, T, solider)
  • Swim on side with scissors kick
  • Water Safety Rules (walk on deck, no pushing people into the pool, don't swim alone, look before you leap, how to get help, who/what is a lifeguard)
  • Wearing a life jacket, jump into water and swim 15 yards on front, then on back

To pass to Silver Sharks the camper must be able to:

  1. Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl 25 yards, swim back stroke for 25 yards, tread for 1 minute
  2. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards
  3. Swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards

Silver Sharks (Level 5A)

Practice:

  • Knee dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater fro 15 yards
  • Front crawl for 50 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Back crawl for 50 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Breaststroke for 25 yards
  • Butterfly for 25 yards
  • Flip turn for front crawl
  • Flip turn for back crawl
  • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Back float for 2 minutes
  • Elementary backstroke for 25 yards
  • Sidestroke for 25 yards

To pass to Gold Sharks the camper must be able to:

  1. Perform a knee dive, swim Front crawl for 50 yards with 2 second stream line off walls and flip turns
  2. Back crawl for 50 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  3. Swim Breaststroke 25 yards
  4. Swim Butterfly 25 yards
  5. Swim Elementary Backstroke 25 yards
  6. Swim Sidestroke 25 yards
  7. Tread water for 2 minutes

 

Gold Sharks (Level 5B)

Practice:

  • Standing dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater fro 15 yards
  • Front crawl for 75 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for front crawl
  • Back crawl for 75 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for back crawl
  • Breaststroke for 50 yards
  • Butterfly for 50 yards
  • Tread water for 3 minutes
  • Back float for 3 minutes
  • Elementary backstroke for 25 yards
  • Sidestroke for 25 yards

 

 

To pass to Platinum Sharks the camper must be able to:

1. Perform a standing dive, swim Front crawl for 75 yards with 2 second stream line off walls and flip turns

2. Back crawl for 75 yards with 2 second stream line off walls and flip turns

3. Tread water for 3 minutes

4. Swim breaststroke 50 yards

5. Swim butterfly 50 yards
Platinum Sharks (Mini-Waves or Swim Team)

Practice:

  • Standing dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater fro 15 yards
  • Front crawl for 100 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for front crawl
  • Back crawl for 100 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for back crawl
  • Breaststroke for 75 yards
  • Butterfly for 75 yards
  • Tread water for 4 minutes
  • Back float for 4 minutes
  • Elementary backstroke for 50 yards
  • Sidestroke for 50 yards

 

To pass to Stingrays the camper must be able to:

  1. Swim 100 yards each of Free, & Back, using proper flip turns
  2. 75 yards of Butterfly
  3. 75 yards of Breaststroke
  4. Surface dive to the bottom of the deep end and retrieve objects
  5. Tread water for 4 minutes

 

 

Stingray (Mini-Waves or Swim Team)

Practice:

  • Standing dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater fro 15 yards
  • Front crawl for 200 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for front crawl
  • Back crawl for 100 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for back crawl
  • Breaststroke for 75 yards
  • Butterfly for 75 yards
  • Tread water for 5 minutes
  • Back float for 5 minutes
  • Elementary backstroke for 50 yards
  • Sidestroke for 50 yards
  • 100 yards IM (25 yards each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle)

 

To pass to Whales the camper must be able to:

1.      Swim IM using proper turns

2.      Retrieve brick from bottom of pool

3.      Tread water for 5 minutes

4.      Swim 200 yards freestyle

 

 


Whale (Mini-Waves or Swim Team)

Practice:

  • Standing dive from side of pool
  • Swim underwater fro 15 yards
  • Front crawl for 200 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for front crawl
  • Back crawl for 200 yards with 2 second stream line off walls
  • Flip turn for back crawl
  • Breaststroke for 100 yards
  • Butterfly for 100 yards
  • Tread water for 5 minutes
  • Back float for 5 minutes
  • Elementary backstroke for 50 yards
  • Sidestroke for 50 yards
  • Swim 20 yards to retrieve brick off bottom, swim back holding brick on chest and kick breaststroke

 

 

To pass Whales the camper must be able to:

1.      Swim 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle consecutively

2.      Swim 100 yards Butterfly

3.      Perform all starts from block

4.      Swim 20 yards to retrieve brick off bottom, swim back holding brick on chest and kick breaststroke

5.      Tread for one minute using legs only
