One-Week Specialty Camps at the Jewish Community Center of Greater PittsburghSquirrel Hill and J & R Specialty Camps (PDF)Squirrel Hill and J & R Specialty Camps Registration Form (PDF) One-week Specialty Camps and Fun Days enable you to customize your child’s summer activities to suit their interests and your family’s schedule. In addition to the specialty camps and Fun Days taking place in Squirrel Hill, the JCC is offering several specialty camps at J&R Day Camp in Monroeville for children entering grades 3 to 5. The camps incorporate classic J&R fun with instruction from qualified professionals. There is a $25 materials fee for each camp for Session II J&R campers. Specialty camps are open to children who are not attending the full second session of J&R at $360 per week. Specialty camps are from 9 am to 3:30 pm and include lunch unless otherwise noted. After-camp care is available beginning when the camp day is over for a fee of $12/day. Specialty camps may be cancelled if enrollment requirements are not met. A five-day notice will be given by phone. JUNE 15-19JCC Squirrel HillCavaliers Basketball Camp: grades 1-8The Cleveland Cavaliers and the National Basketball Academy are hosting this camp for boys and girls. Learn the same drills and skills as the Cavaliers players. Bring your lunch.
Dance Arts: grades 3-6Experience dance, acting, musical theater as well as swimming and crafts in this 3-day camp taught by seasoned professionals. Bring your lunch.
Swim CampFor level 5 and 6 swimmers or Squirrel Hill Swim Team members, the focus is on starts, turns, stroke improvement and endurance. Bring your lunch.
June Fun Days: grades K-7Spend the week with us going to fun places. Bring a dairy lunch, swimsuit and towel daily.
JULY 20-24JCC Squirrel HillDaytrippers: grades 6-8Explore some of Pittsburgh’s most fun hot spots such as Sandcastle, Kennywood, Romp N’ Roll, PNC Park and Dave & Buster’s.
Flag Football: grades 1-8Learn to pass, catch, throw and be part of a team from teacher Sam Bellin. Girls and boys of all skill levels welcome. Camp will be held outdoors, weather permitting.
Spanish through Craft, Music and Dance: grades 1-5Children will learn Latin American dances and be exposed to Spanish pictures, stories, puppetry and songs. Instructor Barbara Undurraga was born in Santiago, Chile, and has a master’s degree in viola performance from Duquesne University.
Tennis: grades 1-5Learn from tennis pro Mark Haffner. Morning sessions are held at an outdoor tennis court. $275J&R Day CampSay Cheese:grades 3-5 Join J&R Photographer Haley Harned for five days of fun with cameras. Learn how to make and use a pinhole camera while discovering ways to stage photos, pose subjects and build an album.
JULY 27-31JCC Squirrel HillFree Ride: Youth Earn-a-Bike: grades 6-8Campers learn basic bicycle repair and maintenance from instructors at Construction Junction while fixing up a bike of their own to keep, as well as a bike lock and helmet.
French African Drum and Dance: grades 6-8A professional dancer from Guinea will teach you basic African dance steps while speaking only French. Instructor Yamoussa Camara, a native of Guinea, performed in the national ballet of Guinea and taught dance and drum at Yale University for 10 years.
MLS Soccer Camp: grades 1-8The official camp and clinic program of Major League Soccer will bring experienced instructors to the JCC this summer for children of all skill levels.
Tennis: grades 1-8Learn from tennis pro Mark Haffner. Morning sessions are held at an outdoor tennis court.
J&R Day CampNow Wear This: grades 3-5Join J&R Creative Arts Instructor Jessica Williams and create your own special look. This week it’s all about wearable art—we’ll provide the clothing, you provide the imagination.
Outdoor Adventure: grades 3-5Spend this week going back to nature with J&R Ropes Course Instructor Bobby Helfer. Campers will love creek hikes, nature scavenger hunts, culinary inventions in the great outdoors and a special overnight at J&R Day Camp.
AUGUST 3-7JCC Squirrel HillCarnegie Science Center Build It Camp: grades 1-5Kids are challenged to create earthquake-proof structures and indestructible bridges using LEGO® bricks, K’Nex® and electrical circuits.
Golf: grades 1-8Learn to play golf with First Tee of Pittsburgh. JCC will provide transportation to and from Schenley Park.
Puppet Making: grades 3-5Campers will design and create their own puppets and costumes with professional puppeteer Laura Opshinsky of We’re Holden Puppets. Using their new puppets, they will act out a variety of stories and bring folk tales to life. On Friday, there will be performance at the JCC.
That’s Sew Cool: grades 6-8Campers will learn the basics of hand and machine sewing from Instructor Brea Furman. They will make a patchwork pillow and their choice of either a drawstring backpack or a skirt.
J&R Day CampBreak the Mold: grades 3-5Join J&R Creative Arts Instructor Jessica Williams for a week of sculpting using wire, clay and mannequins. Take home your very own life-size creation.
What’s All That Racket?: grades 3-5Spend the week learning backhand, forehand, serves and rules of the game from J&R Athletics Instructor Kelly Young. Tennis pro or tennis novice, this week is built just for you!
AUGUST 10-14JCC Squirrel HillCarnegie Science Center Wizard Camp: grades 1-5During this magical camp, kids explore dry ice, glow-in-the-dark slime, shrinky dinks, and color-changing beads.
USA Professional Karate: grades 1-8Learn karate with George Mowod and his black belt instructors from the USA Professional Karate Studio. No uniform is required and beginners are welcome.
Puppet Making and Playwriting: grades 6-8Campers design and create their own puppets and costumes, and write their own puppet shows, led by professional puppeteer Laura Opshinsky. Camp will culminate with a Friday performance.
J&R Day CampSports Out of Sorts: grades 3-5Biking, trail-running, lacrosse, yoga and kickboxing are only a few of the sports you’ll come to love this week at J&R with Athletics Instructor Kelly Young and JCC Fitness Staff Patti Sciulli and Laurie Wood. Sports fanatics will enjoy the wide variety of options this week.
AUGUST 17-21JCC Squirrel HillOld School Basketball Camp: grades 1-8Learn the fundamentals with JCC expert and College Hall of Famer Charles Shealey. Bring your lunch. JCC will provide a snack.
