Pittsburgh Shines at the 2011 Games Team Pittsburgh, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh’s teen representatives at the JCC Maccabi Games® in Philadelphia, PA, had a wonderful week of athletic competition, and the experience of being with more than 1000 Jewish teens from all over the world. The Pittsburgh JCC’s 14 and under basketball team, coached by Jeff Cohen had a good week beating teams from San Diego, and Great Britain but losing to eventual gold and silver medal winners Chicago and Philly.. Team members Alec Bernstein, Dylan Groff, Jacob Horvitz, Gabe Kass, Jacob Chajson, Daniel Vargo, Sam Nepo and Charlie Berntsen, also participate in the “Day of Caring and Sharing”. This year all the athletes put together care packages for our troops over seas along with learning about Tikkun Olam. Three Pittsburgh 16 and under soccer players, Grant Goldberg, Jason and Justin Beiriger, joined forces with boys from Peninsula, CA, Richmond, VA and Northern Virginia to performed at a very high level, playing against very good competition. Jamie Beiriger, Mark Rollman, Aaron Yalowich and David Frisch were on a mixed team too. Along with boys from Houston, Detroit and Delaware this group of 14 and under boys upset Mexico before losing to Panama in the bronze medal game. The Pittsburgh JCC Maccabi program is supported in part by the Fred Hoffman Maccabi Memorial Scholarship Fund, Larry Ruttenberg Fund, Joel Sigal Maccabi Fund and The Western Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. At this week-long Jewish Olympic style event, each athlete has the chance to participate.
