South Hills Pool to Close for Renovations
Friday, April 3, at 5 pm, to Sunday, April 19, at 8 am
During the closing the following improvements will be made:

  • Replacement of Dectron system, which controls air temperature and humidity in the pool area
  • Replacement of boiler, which assists in control of pool water temperature
  • Replacement of all ceiling light fixtures with LED fixtures (no more burned out lights!)
  • Removal of Tidal Wave record board, which is no longer updated or used
  • Repair of tile at bottom of pool
  • Complete cleaning of entire pool area


Swim Lessons 
We use the American Red Cross learn to swim program, which teaches aquatic and safety skills in progressive levels. Dates & Times

New: Parent and Tots Class (Babies age 8-20 months)
Tuesdays, 9:30-10 am
March 17-May 19
Water exploration, teaching parents how to work and play with children in the water. Limit 10 babies.

American Red Cross Certifications

Minimum age is 15, bring state I.D., Passport or birth Certificate to the first class.
You must be able to swim 300 yards of the pool continuously, using free style or breaststroke. Must swim 20 yards (using free style or breaststroke) surface dive retrieve a 10lb brick surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick exit the pool without using the ladder or steps.  You must be able to tread water using legs only for 2 minutes. Lifeguard Book required for the first day of class. Buy or download the book for free at American Red Cross.

Certifications Received: Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for professional rescuer (2 years)

Lifeguard Recertification:
You must have a current ARC Lifeguard Certification.
You must bring your card on the first day of class. You must pass written test with 80% or better.  Water test/skills must be 100% accurate.  You must attend both classes, ARC mandates 13 hours for a re-certification. Please remember to bring your Lifeguard Book the first day of class

Session II
Saturday, May 9: 9 am-4 pm
Sunday, May 10: noon-6 pm

Course Length: 13 Hours
Certifications Received: Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR and AED (2 years)
Fees: $125/member; $160/community


Toddler Tadpoles: ages 2-4
This class is an introduction to organized swim lessons and water exploration utilizing an elevated swim platform. Instructors will teach level 1 skills using songs, toys and games to help toddlers to become more comfortable in the water. Parents do not get into the water. Enrollment is limited to 6 toddlers per class. Dates & Times

Level 1: An introduction to water skills
In level 1 your children will learn to overcome fear, build confidence in the water, learn proper body positioning and correct arm and leg movement. Dates & Times

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
We learn to float and recover to a standing position without support. Children learn to alternate their arm and leg movements with their faces in the water without support. Dates & Times

Level 3: Stroke Development
In Level 3 students will learn how to coordinate front and back crawl without support. We will learn how to side breathe, perform elementary backstroke, learn the scissors kick and the dolphin kick. Dates & Times

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
In Level 4, students will improve all their skills and fine tune their strokes. Class is held in the lap lanes and students will swim lengths of the pool using all strokes. Introduction of kneeling dives and treading water. Dates & Times

Level 5: Stroke Refinement
In level 5 students will build endurance to swim laps. We will learn flip turns for front and back crawl and refine open turns for breaststroke and butterfly. Dates & Times

Fitness Swimming for Kids
This class will help students refine strokes and build endurance to become a stronger swimmer. We will work on all strokes and flip turns and use kickboards and pull buys. Students will learn how to check their heart rate. Students must be able to swim 25 yards of each stroke. Dates & Times

Meet Our Staff

Suzy Harouse is the Aquatic Director at the South Hills JCC. Harouse, of Mt. Lebanon, has been swimming since the age of four. Harouse swam for Latrobe High School and for the Nanooks at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, where she also worked as a lifeguard and assistant facility supervisor at a local recreation center. Harouse currently coaches for the Mt. Lebanon Aqua Club's Minnows team and previously taught swimming for five years at the Upper St. Clair Recreation Center. She swims with the Mt. Lebanon Masters twice a week and is a Certified Pool Operator. She previously worked for 15 years in sales, marketing and training for Nabisco Brands and Ferrero USA. Suzy is an American Red Cross lifeguard and a Certified Water Safety Instructor as well as a certified Pool-Spa Operator.

Earleen Birkner

Shawn McClure is the Aquatics Assistant at the South Hills JCC.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Pittsburgh.   Shawn served in the US Navy as an Information System Technician second class and a Watch Supervisor.  He served aboard the USS Enterprise (the carrier in the movie, “Top Gun”).  He has been working at the JCC for over 10 years, first in the fitness center before jumping into the pool and Aquatics management.  He is an American Red Cross lifeguard and a Certified Water Safety Instructor, Shawn is also a Certified Pool Operator and has his Pesticide License.   In his spare time, he supports all the Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Penguins.
